My Career So Far
I started playing golf properly at the age of thirteen and attained my first handicap of 17 shortly after. I decided to dedicate my time to one sport at the age of sixteen and steadily progressed with my handicap. Even though I was fairly late to start junior golf I progressed quickly and did manage to represented Worcestershire County at under eighteen level. I had some success at club level before turning professional to continue my development. While training as PGA Professional I had some success winning a number of County level PGA Pro Ams and Medal titles, whilst also competing at Regional and National PGA tournaments.
I now have over fifteen years experience working in the golf industry. I started my career working at Ravenmeadow Golf Club and USA Golf at the age of 15. While at Ravenmeadow I had the opportunity to assist Mark Slater with the junior coaching, and soon developed a real passion to help new young golfer improve. After five years at Ravenmeadow Golf Club I moved onto Worcester Golf and Country Club in February 2006 to work with Graham Farr.
Shortly after my move to Worcester I turned professional and enrolled on the PGA degree programme which is run by the PGA and Birmingham University. Once I had my level one coaching certificate I started teaching TriGolf in local schools and introduced many children to golf. This enabled me to build a structured junior coaching program at Worcester Golf & Country Club and increase the junior membership from fifteen to over seventy. A couple of years later I happily graduated from my degree with a merit in May 2011.
Once I completed my level two coaching certificate I started teaching on a one to one basis and continued to develop my teaching skills by working with other coaches and attending continued professional development courses. I have been lucky enough to work with a vast amount of amateurs and professionals with a wide range of abilities. As a coach I get as much satisfaction from helping a beginner to get the ball airborne as I do fine tuning an elite players swing. However I have worked with:
- Club Champions
- County Champions
- International Amateurs
- Tour Professionals
I have been lucky enough to caddy on the Europro Tour, European Challenge Tour, European Tour, Final Qualifying for The Open and at The Seniors Open in 2019. This was a great experience getting up close to the worlds best players and seeing them perform under the pressure on the highest stage. I hope to continue to build on this experience in the future as it’s great fun, but on a professional level it has helped further my coaching expertise.
Worcestershire County Boys
I’m proud to be able to tell you that I became Worcestershire County Under 18’s Team Manager in 2012. This involves building squads, helping develop team performance, team selection, assisting with winter coaching and general management leading up to and on match days. I enjoy this role immensely as it allows me to work with the best young players in the County. I help them develop their game in the winter training program and then get to watch them perform throughout the season.
After a successful year working with the under 18 squad from October 2013 the County increased my involvement to also manage the under 16 team.
With the help of the County Union I developed a coaching system below under 14 called County Development Coaching. I am lead coach to a number of high quality coaches around the County that build development squads that feed into the County system. This has been great fun to help manage and improve the number of players feeding into the County pyramid.
Worcestershire Girls County Academy Coach
In November 2013 I was appointed as a Worcestershire Girls County CAP coach. This involves designing and delivering a coaching programme to a group of potential county players. The programme covers technical, tactical and psychological performance and helps the girls with their home coaches to improve in all areas as golfers.
As a golf club professional I no longer have aspirations of playing on one of the world tours. However I believe it is very important to maintain a high standard of skill and I still enjoy competing at County and Regional level. I enjoy using my own coaching knowledge to continue to push my own game forward and my passion for playing my best will never leave me.
Continued Professional Development
I continue to build my knowledge by attending continued professional development courses run by the PGA and observing experienced golf professionals.
I have PGA AA status which is awarded for amassing over 100 continued professional development points.
I have attended the following courses;
Karl Morris – Mind Factor
Jamie Edwards – Train the Brain
England Golf Union Coaching Conference 2013 – Developing Winners
Ping Custom Fitting Program 2013
Paul Affleck – Tour Pro Short Game Coach
PGA Breakfast Club 2013
